Occasional Help

Volunteering helps you feel complete. You bring joy to others and those people bring joy to you. Whether it is weeding at the House of Hope or painting at the Haven on Morris Road, there is something for everyone. Throughout the year we have fundraising events, celebrations for our guests, holiday events, and maintenance work parties. Please contact us and let us know what you would like to help with.

Board Positions

The Whidbey Homeless Coalition is passionately growing to meet the needs of our homeless community. That requires more specialized knowledge on our board. We are currently looking to add new board members who have, as one of our founders calls it, ‘a heart for the homeless’. While we are looking for a few people with specialized skills & experience, anyone who has a passion for this work is welcome - we believe that everyone has something unique and valuable to offer.

If you’re interested in joining the board, just click the apply button to ask for more information, or fill out the application form and email it to us.

If you’re wondering just what kind of specialized skills are needed, you can check out the descriptions below.

Background Checks

If you will be working with guests, we require a Washington State background check. An issue with the check does not necessarily disqualify you from volunteering.

Board Member well versed in finance, accounting, or non-profit taxes

The Whidbey Homeless Coalition has nearly quadrupled its annual income over the past three years. We currently own two properties and multiple vans, along with other assets. We have nearly a dozen employees and various related expenses. We would like a board member familiar with non-profit finance, accounting, or non-profit taxes.

Board Member well versed in legal issues

The Whidbey Homeless Coalition has never had a legal issue and as we grow, we would like to keep it that way. This board position will help point out where legal issues might arise, where policies are weak, and highlight concerns that we have not thought of.

Board Member well versed in housing and county codes

Since the Whidbey Homeless Coalition owns two houses (the Haven and the House of Hope), we have ongoing repair, maintenance, and upgrading needs. This board member would work with and advise the Executive Director on any building needs (code requirements, permitting, etc.) They may also manage volunteers and contractors doing work on our buildings.

Board Member well versed in marketing, social media and grant writing

We need a few people, volunteers or board members, to help us keep in touch with our community, promote fundraising events, and search for (and apply for) funding opportunities.

Of course, with COVID-19 we conduct many of our board meetings remotely.
